Moulding Boxes

At Alloy Master Technologies Pvt. Ltd., high-quality castings begin with precision mold preparation. One of the most critical tools in this process is the molding box, which allows us to create accurate, consistent sand molds using advanced techniques and careful attention to detail.


How Molding Boxes Work

Molding boxes are designed to shape and contain sand for the creation of sand molds from various types of sand. The typical process involves several carefully controlled steps:


  • Ramming the Sand – The sand is packed into the molding box using a vibratory ramming process to ensure uniform density. Periodic leveling, or screeding, ensures the sand surface is perfectly flat and stable.

  • Stabilizing the Surface – The surface of the packed sand can be treated with a sizing compound, which stabilizes the mold and prevents unwanted deformation.

  • Placing the Pattern – A metal or wooden pattern representing the shape of the casting is placed onto the prepared sand. Additional molding box segments are added if required, and more sand is carefully rammed over and around the pattern.

  • Mold Assembly and Parting – A cover is placed on the box, which is then turned and unlatched. The halves of the mold are carefully parted, and the pattern, along with sprue and vent patterns, is removed. Any defects caused by the removal process are corrected, and additional sizing may be applied to strengthen the mold surface.

  • Forming the Green Mold – This procedure creates a “green” sand mold, which is ready but still moist. Proper drying of the mold is essential before pouring molten metal, as insufficient drying can result in steam explosions that can compromise safety and product quality.
